Zamak Ingots

What is Zamak?

Zamak is a family of zinc-based alloys containing aluminum, magnesium, and copper. The name is an acronym from the German names of its primary metals: Zink, Aluminium, Magnesium, and Kupfer (copper). It is widely used in die casting for automotive, hardware, and industrial components.

Most Common Premium Grades

Zamak 2 (ZA-2) Highest hardness and strength in the Zamak family; used in mechanical parts requiring durability.

Zamak 3 (ZA-3) (Most Popular) The standard benchmark grade — excellent balance of castability, strength, and dimensional stability. Widely used in automotive, electronics, and hardware.

Zamak 5 (ZA-5) Higher copper content than Zamak 3, offering improved tensile strength and hardness; preferred in Europe for structural components.

Zamak 7 (ZA-7) Ultra-high purity, low magnesium variant — superior fluidity and surface finish; ideal for thin-wall and decorative castings.

Key Quality Indicators for Premium Grade

  • High purity zinc base (min. 99.99% Zn feedstock — Special High Grade)
  • Strict impurity control — especially Lead, Cadmium, and Tin (these cause intergranular corrosion)
  • Compliance with ASTM B86, EN 1774, or ISO 301 standards
  • Consistent ingot weight — typically 1 kg, 5 kg, or 25 kg bars
  • Mill Test Certificate (MTC) with full chemical analysis per batch
  • Traceability — heat/lot number marking on each ingot

Typical Applications

Zamak 3/5 are dominant in automotive parts, lock bodies, door handles, zippers, electrical connectors, toy components, and precision hardware. Zamak 7 is preferred for fine decorative and plumbing fixtures.
